This course provides critical care nurses, paramedics, and physicians with an understanding of the basic physiology of the ECMO system. It also covers the most common emergencies and how to intervene with limited resources, particularly in transport. Students will learn about the differences between venovenous and venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), common indications for each, and the physiology of both configurations. Additionally, they will gain an understanding of the importance of preparation for emergencies, as decompensation can be rapid and masked until death occurs. Finally, they will learn how to determine if a patient is a candidate for ECMO support prior to making the decision.
