ME209.1x is a self-paced course designed to provide students of mechanical engineering with an introduction to the fundamentals of thermodynamics. The course covers topics such as basic concepts and definitions, the work interaction, the first law, energy, and the heat interaction, the zeroth law, temperature, and scales of temperature, properties of gases and liquids, equations of state, the second law, thermodynamic temperature scales, and entropy, and relations between properties. Additionally, open thermodynamic systems will be explored. Problem-solving will be emphasized, and students will need to spend significant effort on solving exercises. This course requires 12 weeks of study, about 10 hours a week, and is suitable for both engineers and scientists. It is also useful for teachers of thermodynamics.
