Do you want to become a great 1v1 defender? It's not just about being big, fast, and strong! With the help of Online Soccer Academy (OSA), players can improve their skills and learn basic and advanced techniques. OSA offers over 200 free soccer training videos and a free weekly eNewsletter. Coaches can also host OSA Soccer Camps anywhere in the United States for teams and clubs of all levels.
The key points of 1v1 defending include closing down space, jockeying, forcing the attacker onto their weak foot, staying on your toes, keeping your feet moving, and keeping your eye on the ball. When the time is right, the defender should win the ball with confidence and get their body behind them.
To practice 1v1 defending, players will need a few balls, 10 cones, and a partner. Set up two cone goals and a small field around the goals. The defender will pass the ball to the attacker, then sprint and close the space down, set their feet and start defending. The attacker tries to beat the defender and score through the cone goals. If the defender wins it, they try to score or kick the ball out.
