What does this course tell? (Please note that the following overview content is from the original platform) Masonry structures constitute approximately 85% of the built stock in a developing country such as India; however a vast majority of this is non-engineered or semi-engineered constructions demonstrating poor performance particularly under earthquake actions Formal engineering design and detailing with due consideration to seismic action is indispensible to ensure structural safety In this direction the recent edition of the National Building Code (2016) of India has introduced the section on reinforced masonry design as a viable structural option The current course aims at elucidating theories on mechanical behaviour of masonry assemblages under different actions and introduces students to working stress and limit state approaches to analysis and design of unreinforced reinforced confined masonry structures for gravity and lateral loads including earthquake loads The course will also briefly address behaviour of masonry infill walls and procedures for structural assessment and strengthening of existing masonry structures Students who undertakes this course will have an understanding of behavior of structural masonry under different loads and be able to estimate capacities and design masonry walls and systems
INTENDED AUDIENCE
: The course is appropriate for senior UG (Civil) and PG students and specialising in structural engineering
PREREQUISITES
: Student must have completed courses on strength of materials structural analysis structural design (RC or steel)
and preferably seismic design of structures
INDUSTRY SUPPORT
: Public Works Departments (CPWD&PWDs) Birla Aerocon (and other AAC block and cement concrete block
manufacturers) Bekaert (India) Weinerberger (India)
We considered the value of this course from many aspects, and finally summarized it for you from two aspects: skills and knowledge, and the people who benefit from it: (Please note that our content is optimized through artificial intelligence tools and carefully reviewed by our editorial staff.) What skills and knowledge will you acquire during this course? Masonry Mechanical Behavior: Understand the mechanical behavior of masonry structures under various types of loads, including gravity and lateral loads such as earthquake forces. Design Approaches: Learn the working stress and limit state approaches for the analysis and design of both unreinforced and reinforced masonry structures, with a focus on structural safety. Seismic Considerations: Gain knowledge about the importance of seismic design and how to incorporate seismic considerations into masonry structure design. Infill Walls: Explore the behavior and design of masonry infill walls, a common component in building structures. Structural Assessment and Strengthening: Understand procedures for assessing and strengthening existing masonry structures, ensuring their continued structural integrity. Who will benefit from this course? The course on Design of Masonry Structures will benefit the following individuals and professions: 1. Civil Engineering Students: Senior undergraduate and postgraduate students specializing in structural engineering will benefit from this course. It will provide them with a comprehensive understanding of the behavior of structural masonry under different loads and equip them with the skills to estimate capacities and design masonry walls and systems. 2. Structural Engineers: Professionals working in the field of structural engineering, particularly those involved in the design and analysis of masonry structures, will benefit from this course. It will enhance their knowledge and expertise in working stress and limit state approaches to analysis and design of unreinforced, reinforced, and confined masonry structures for gravity and lateral loads, including earthquake loads. 3. Public Works Departments: Public Works Departments, such as CPWD (Central Public Works Department) and PWDs (Public Works Departments) in India, will find this course beneficial. It will provide their engineers with the necessary skills and knowledge to design and assess masonry structures, ensuring structural safety and compliance with the National Building Code. 4. Masonry Product Manufacturers: Companies involved in the production of masonry products, such as Birla Aerocon, AAC block manufacturers, cement concrete block manufacturers, Bekaert, and Weinerberger, will benefit from this course. It will enhance their understanding of the design requirements and behavior of masonry structures, enabling them to develop and market products that meet the industry standards and requirements. Overall, this course will benefit students and professionals in the field of civil engineering, particularly those specializing in structural engineering, as well as public works departments and masonry product manufacturers.
