What does this course tell? (Please note that the following overview content is from the original platform)This course can also be taken for academic credit as ECEA 5600, part of CU Boulder’s Master of Science in Electrical Engineering degree.Optical instruments are how we see the world, from corrective eyewear to medical endoscopes to cell phone cameras to orbiting telescopes. When you finish this course, you will be able to design, to first order, such optical systems with simple mathematical and graphical techniques. This first order design will allow you to develop the foundation needed to begin all optical design as well as the intuition needed to quickly address the feasibility of complicated designs during brainstorming meetings. You will learn how to enter these designs into an industry-standard design tool, OpticStudio by Zemax, to analyze and improve performance with powerful automatic optimization methods. We considered the value of this course from many aspects, and finally summarized it for you from two aspects: skills and knowledge, and the people who benefit from it: (Please note that our content is optimized through artificial intelligence tools and carefully reviewed by our editorial staff.) What skills and knowledge will you acquire during this course? By taking this course, the learner will acquire the following skills and knowledge:

1. Ability to design optical systems: The learner will gain the skills to design optical systems from scratch using simple mathematical and graphical techniques. They will understand the fundamental principles and concepts involved in optical system design.

2. First-order design: The learner will be able to develop first-order designs, which provide a basic framework for optical system design. This will enable them to start the design process and lay the foundation for more complex designs.

3. Feasibility assessment: The learner will acquire the intuition to quickly assess the feasibility of complicated optical designs during brainstorming meetings. They will be able to evaluate the practicality and viability of different design options.

4. Industry-standard design tool: The course will teach the learner how to use OpticStudio by Zemax, an industry-standard design tool. They will learn how to enter their designs into the software and analyze the performance of the optical systems.

5. Performance optimization: The learner will gain knowledge of powerful automatic optimization methods available in OpticStudio. They will be able to improve the performance of their optical systems by utilizing these optimization techniques.

Overall, this course will equip the learner with the necessary skills and knowledge to design optical systems, assess their feasibility, and optimize their performance using industry-standard design tools. Who will benefit from this course? This course will benefit individuals interested in or working in the field of optical engineering or electrical engineering.
