This course provides an overview of the different types of offshore structures used for exploiting oil, gas and minerals. It covers the fundamentals of advanced structural analysis, with special emphasis on its application to offshore structures. Topics include detailed analysis methods for both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional structures, mathematical modeling of problem formulation and solution using MATLAB coding, and hands-on experience of using MATLAB. This course is intended for students in Civil, Mechanical, Aerospace, Applied Mechanics, Naval Architecture, and Structures. No prerequisites are required. Industry support is provided by ONGC, Reliance, UGC, and Technip.
[Applications]
The application of this course can be seen in the design and analysis of offshore structures. Students can use the knowledge gained from this course to develop models for the analysis of offshore structures and use MATLAB coding to solve the problems. They can also use the codes provided in the lecture notes to gain a better understanding of the concepts. Additionally, the course can be used to gain an understanding of the fundamentals of advanced structural analysis and its application to offshore structures. This knowledge can be used to develop better designs for offshore structures and improve their safety and reliability.
[Career Paths]
1. Offshore Structural Engineer: Offshore structural engineers are responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining offshore structures such as oil rigs, platforms, and pipelines. They must have a strong understanding of structural engineering principles and be able to use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed plans and models. As the demand for offshore energy resources increases, the need for offshore structural engineers is expected to grow.
2. Offshore Structural Analyst: Offshore structural analysts are responsible for analyzing the structural integrity of offshore structures. They use computer-aided engineering (CAE) software to simulate the behavior of offshore structures under various conditions. They must have a strong understanding of structural engineering principles and be able to interpret the results of their simulations. As the demand for offshore energy resources increases, the need for offshore structural analysts is expected to grow.
3. Offshore Structural Design Engineer: Offshore structural design engineers are responsible for designing and constructing offshore structures such as oil rigs, platforms, and pipelines. They must have a strong understanding of structural engineering principles and be able to use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed plans and models. As the demand for offshore energy resources increases, the need for offshore structural design engineers is expected to grow.
4. Offshore Structural Integrity Engineer: Offshore structural integrity engineers are responsible for ensuring the structural integrity of offshore structures. They use computer-aided engineering (CAE) software to simulate the behavior of offshore structures under various conditions. They must have a strong understanding of structural engineering principles and be able to interpret the results of their simulations. As the demand for offshore energy resources increases, the need for offshore structural integrity engineers is expected to grow.
