This course provides an introduction to the criminal justice system in England and Wales. It covers the key stages of the criminal justice process, from the investigation of a crime to the sentencing of an offender. It also examines the role of key institutions such as the police, the courts, and the Crown Prosecution Service. The course also looks at the criminal law, including the elements of a crime, defences, and sentencing.


The course is divided into four modules. The first module introduces the criminal justice system and its key institutions. The second module looks at the criminal law, including the elements of a crime, defences, and sentencing. The third module examines the investigation of a crime, from the initial report to the police to the gathering of evidence. The fourth module looks at the prosecution and adjudication of a crime, including the roles of the Crown Prosecution Service and the courts.


Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to think critically about the criminal justice system and its processes. You will also be encouraged to consider the ethical and moral implications of the criminal justice system. By the end of the course, you will have a good understanding of the criminal justice system in England and Wales and the role of key institutions within it.
